2026 — Volvo Design Competition

Fjällhem

Family interior concept for the 2030–2035 crossover horizon.

The Volvo Design Competition 2026 challenged designers to envision a family vehicle interior for the 2030–2035 horizon — a period where electrification, autonomy, and shifting mobility habits will fundamentally redefine what a car interior needs to be. The brief demanded more than aesthetics: it asked for a coherent philosophy of occupancy, one that could justify every surface, material, and light source as part of a larger human intention.

Fjällhem — interior concept overview

Fjällhem — Swedish for "mountain home" — is built around a single Nordic proposition: the car is not a machine, it is the warm place you return to when the mountain is done with you. Every surface, every material choice, every light source is resolved through that lens. The interior does not perform or announce itself. It receives.

The design is structured around five Scandinavian cultural concepts, each translated directly into spatial, material, and lighting decisions. None of them function as decoration — each one carries a specific design consequence.

Lagom

Swedish

Not too little, not too much. Balance and proportion govern every decision. Ornamentation is absent — form justifies itself through use and fit.

Friluftsliv

Norwegian

Spiritual connection to outdoor life. The interior does not shelter you from the landscape — it frames it. Three aperture states give each passenger their own relationship with the terrain outside.

Hygge · Kos

Danish · Norwegian

Warmth, coziness, and togetherness. Tactile materials, soft lighting, and human-scaled geometry that invites stillness and shared presence.

Allemansrätten

Swedish

The right to roam — nature belongs to everyone. The design is democratic and unpretentious. There is no hierarchy between driver and passenger; the space belongs equally to everyone inside.

Mörketid

All Nordic

The dark time of winter. Light is a precious, emotional resource. Every light source in the interior carries symbolic weight — it is not a feature, it is a welcome.

Resolved through Lagom, Allemansrätten, and Mörketid. A single horizontal surface runs continuously from door to door without interruption or central volume — no hierarchy between driver and passenger, the space belongs equally to everyone. The instrument display is recessed flush with the surface: inactive, it disappears into the material; active, it serves without announcing itself. A continuous 2700K amber light strip runs the full width just below the dashboard plane — not a feature, but an arrival. The steering wheel is rectangular with soft corners, wrapped in natural wool over brushed warm metal. No leather, no plastic. Technology in Fjällhem does not perform. It listens.

Resolved through Hygge · Kos. Wool that is warm before you touch it. Light that asks nothing of you. The lateral headrest supports the passenger who falls asleep mid-journey — quietly, without announcement. The shared surface between seats is sized for a coffee, a camera, a map, a silence. Fjällhem does not fill the pauses between conversations. It holds them.

Resolved through Friluftsliv. Fjällhem does not shelter you from the mountain — it takes you into it. The outside world must always remain present. Three aperture states give each passenger their own relationship with the landscape: open, filtered, and private — each selectable independently per seat position. You do not pass through nature in Fjällhem. You travel inside it.

Fjällhem is not a luxury car. It is a home that moves with intention — between mountains, with the people that matter.
