Flexidesk

The challenge was to design a multifunctional furniture piece for vertical housing, compact apartments where space is a constant constraint. Most furniture solves one problem at a time: a desk is a desk, and a table is a table. The brief demanded something different: a single object that could adapt to multiple uses without cluttering the space it was meant to optimize.

FlexiDesk is built around the idea that a piece of furniture should earn its square footage. The design integrates a workstation, a dining or meeting surface, and storage into a single compact unit, each function available without compromising the others. The form follows a strict logic of efficiency: no excess material, no wasted joints, no unnecessary parts. Clean lines and a restrained material palette keep the object visually light even when fully loaded.

The design process began with space mapping, understanding how people actually move and work in small apartments. Sketches explored different configurations, folding mechanisms, and storage strategies before converging on a structure that balanced rigidity with simplicity. Every decision was filtered through two questions: can it be built without waste, and can it be assembled without tools?

The prototype was built at 1:1 scale to validate ergonomics, assembly sequence, and structural behavior. The panel system was designed to interlock without hardware, making both assembly and flat-pack shipping straightforward. Physical testing confirmed the proportions worked across different use configurations.

Once the spatial logic was validated through sketches and cardboard mock-ups, the design moved into full 3D modeling. Digital development allowed for precise coordination between the structural panels, the drawer system, and the folding surface, ensuring that every component fit together cleanly and could be cut from standard sheet material with minimal off-cuts.

Form follows constraint. FlexiDesk at its final state, finalist at Dimueble 2024 and exhibited at Expo Mueble Internacional Guadalajara 2024.
